A recently released congressional report highlights the alleged deadly consequences of bureaucratic red tape at the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). Problems include long waits, medical mistakes
The congressional report was released by Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma. It claims that over the last 10 years, more than 1,000 veterans may have suffered premature death as a result of problems at the VA. “The scope of the VA’s incompetence — and Congress’ indifferent oversight — is breathtaking and disturbing. This investigation found the problems at the VA are far deeper than just scheduling,” said Coburn.
The senator went on to note that the VA claims its problems stem from a lack of sufficient resources. However, spending at the VA has actually increased in recent years. In fact, the VA has paid almost $1 billion to veterans and family members for medical malpractice claims alone.

Sen. Coburn’s report also details incidences of blatant medical mistakes, including the failure of doctors to detect a lesion on the lung of a vet when they examined his chest x-ray. The vet did not survive. Another veteran from Philadelphia underwent a routine tooth extraction. The staff at the VA hospital failed to check his blood pressure, which was dangerously low. On his way home, the vet suffered a stroke as a result and is now paralyzed.
Investigative agency issues harsh criticism
Sen. Coburn’s report isn’t the only one that denounces the problems at the VA. The number of vets and their families seeking help has prompted other scathing reports, including one from Carolyn N. Lerner, the head of the Office of Special Counsel. Her agency is charged with investigating whistle-blower complaints and is currently evaluating over 50 pending complaints against the VA. Lerner recently sent a letter to President Obama condemning the VA for brushing aside allegations of misconduct made by VA employees.
She explains that the VA uses a “harmless error” designation to set aside a slew of complaints made about long wait times and poor patient care. Lerner went on to note that many employees of the VA who raised concerns over the mistreatment of veterans faced reprisals at work.
