Bus Accidents Continue to Cause Injury on Long Island

bus accidentBus accidents and other motor vehicle accidents on Long Island continue to cause irreparable injury and harm as we near the close of 2014. On the morning of December 18, five people were injured in an accident in East Hills. Police say one person sustained serious injuries in the collision between a mini-bus and an SUV. The accident occurred between Round Hill Road and Glen Cove Road, causing the latter to close for hours following the incident.

According to police, two children and two adults on the bus were treated for minor injuries. The SUV driver was seriously injured and was taken to the hospital.

Serious motor vehicle accidents on Long Island

Only one week prior to the incident, a Queens woman was injured in Greenlawn when her vehicle slid on ice, causing her to collide with a school bus. Marie Pierre-Paul was driving a 2009 Nissan Altima on Delamere Street, when she attempted to stop at a stop sign at the intersection with Broadway. Instead, her vehicle slid on ice and entered the intersection, where it was hit by a 2002 Chevrolet school bus traveling northbound on Broadway.

Pierre-Paul was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and two male students were also transported to the hospital as a precaution. The bus driver suffered minor injuries and a bus matron was transported to the hospital with a broken leg.

Just one month before, on November 19, three pedestrians were hit by a NICE bus on Long Island. The accident occurred in Great Neck, at Great Neck Plaza, just before noon. According to police, two adults ─ a 64-year-old woman and a 34-year-old woman ─ and a 2-year-old child sustained injuries.

While the injuries did not appear to be life threatening, all three victims were taken to a local hospital. The 64-year-old woman was the most seriously injured, suffering a minor head injury. The other two victims suffered minor injuries. Police noted that no criminality was suspected.

More Long Island bus crashes

On June 2, seventeen Long Island high school students sustained minor injuries when their school bus collided with another bus and a car on the Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow.

Police said none of the students incurred life-threatening injuries.

Back in April, one man died and two others sustained serious injuries in Long Island, when a speeding pickup truck crashed head-on into a chartered bus, causing the bus to slam into a tree.

The driver of the Dodge Dakota truck died at the scene. The bus driver and one passenger were trapped for almost an hour as emergency crews from three Nassau County towns attempted to free them. The two victims were rushed to a local hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
