Head of Takata Steps Down Amid Airbag Recalls, Lawsuits

cars on roadIn the heat of widespread vehicle recalls, criminal investigations, and lawsuits, Steffan Stocker, the president of the airbag manufacturer Takata Corporation, has stepped down from his post. The company announced that Stocker will be replaced by chairman Shigehisa Takada. The company expects that Mr. Takada, as the grandson of the company’s founder, will help unify Takata’s response to the growing list of auto recalls and facilitate decision-making, which has been criticized as slow and ineffective.

A looming question is whether the leadership shakeup will have any effect on Takata’s response to the auto manufacturer recalls. The United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has called Takada’s response thus far inadequate. Though Stocker was the company president, Mr. Takada has remained actively involved as the company spokesman on the recall, making the company’s public statements.

Takata has faced criticism for failing to issue a nationwide recall of the affected driver’s-side airbags, which could cost the company over $900 million. Despite the NHTSA’s insistence that Takata issue a nationwide airbag recall, Takata prefers to only recall airbags in certain hot climates. With Takata’s failure to take action, individual automakers have started to issue recalls on their own, and many consumers have turned to airbag recall lawyers for help.

Individual manufacturers issue national vehicle recalls

Because of the defective airbags, over 7 million vehicles have been included in the most recent auto recalls. The airbag defect, which involves faulty inflators that can cause metal fragments to spray into the passenger compartment when deployed, have caused at least five deaths.

Vehicle makes affected by the recall include:

  • BMW
  • Chrysler
  • Ford
  • General Motors
  • Honda
  • Mazda
  • Mitsubishi
  • Nissan
  • Subaru
  • Toyota

The airbag defect affects vehicles with model years 2000 through 2008. Experts believe the defect caused by heat and humidity, putting drivers in warmer climates at the greatest risk.

Takata, refusing to take nationwide action to fix the problem, is facing a criminal investigation. In the meantime, plaintiffs have filed at least 50 attempted class action lawsuits and some plaintiffs have filed a petition to establish a federal multidistrict litigation for all Takata airbag recall lawsuits. The Judicial Panel on Multi-District Litigation is expected to decide whether to grant the request early this year.
