Long Island Driver High During Fatal Car Crash

Police CarAn all too common occurrence – a fatal multi-vehicle crash – recently took an uncommon twist when the driver admitted to reporters that he was high at the time of the accident. Kendall Owens, a 31-year-old Long Island man, was arrested last week after causing a multi-car pileup and then fleeing the scene.

The accident took place on the William Floyd Parkway and Montauk Highway in Shirley. The accident took place at about 10 p.m. on Tuesday, August 11when Owens struck the vehicle driven by Richard Garcia, of Shirley. The 4-car crash killed Garcia and injured the occupants of two other cars, including an infant and a two-year-old, as well. There has been no announcement yet on whether the loved ones of Mr. Garcia or the injured occupants of the other two vehicles will be bringing a personal injury lawsuit against Owens.

Fatal Long Island crash driver blames PCP

Owens was injured in the collision but reportedly fled the scene of the accident on foot. He was picked up at a nearby strip mall and then treated and arrested at a hospital.

While he was being escorted from the police station after the accident, Owens told reporters that he had been high on PCP at the time of the accident. He called PCP the worst drug in the world and apologized to anyone he hurt. The father of four also apologized “for being a bad dad today”; the accident reportedly took place on his daughter’s birthday.

Suffolk County leads in DUI accidents

For more than a decade, Suffolk County has recorded more alcohol-related crashes than any other county in New York. Nassau County comes in second. In 2013, for example, Suffolk County saw 853 crashes involving alcohol, which was more than 10 percent of the state’s total.

Despite heightened patrolling for drivers under the influence of drugs and alcohol, incidents rise in the summer when both Suffolk and Nassau counties see an influx of visitors. Another drug and alcohol-related crash grabbed attention earlier this year when a pickup truck driven by an impaired driver plowed into a limousine carrying eight women gathered to celebrate a wedding. Four of the women were killed and two were critically injured.

At Edelman, Krasin & Jaye, we are disturbed by this recent news report. But as leading Suffolk County car wreck attorneys, we are not surprised. Unfortunately, as the statistics show, DUI involving drugs or alcohol is still all too prevalent on Long Island’s roadways.
