Bay Shore crash injures officer, kills driver

Police officers in New York face many risks while they are on duty, including the risk of death or serious injury in a motor vehicle accident. Just such an accident recently injured a Suffolk police officer and killed the driver of the car that appears to have triggered the head-on collision.

The accident happened shortly after 6:00 a.m. on Sunday morning in Bay Shore. According to police, a Honda Civic was heading south on Fifth Avenue when it veered unexpectedly into the northbound lanes and collided with a northbound police vehicle. The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. The police officer, a member of the Third Precinct, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries. Police are checking the safety systems on both vehicles.

The police officer will be entitled to workers' compensation benefits, and he will most likely have a separate claim against the driver of the Honda for negligence. Untangling the threads of liability must await the completion of the police safety investigation. The most critical question is why the Honda driver lost control and swerved into the opposite lane. Alcohol is commonly involved in such accidents, but police have made no mention of possible impairment due to alcohol or drugs. Police have likewise made no mention of excessive speed as being involved.

Anyone who has been injured or lost a loved one in a similar accident may wish to consult an experienced personal injury lawyer for an analysis of the evidence and an estimate of the likelihood of recovering damages for medical expenses, lost income and pain and suffering.
